A dietary supplement, also known as a health supplement, is a manufactured, chemical-packed product meant to supplement one's daily diet by taking an oral pill, liquid, tablet, or powder. A dietary supplement can give your body essential nutrients either naturally extracted from food sources like vegetables and fruits or which are synthetic to help increase the amount of the daily intake. It can contain vitamins, minerals and acemannan herbal extracts or it can comprise just essential nutrients. It may also be a combination of products like energy capsules, weight loss supplements, cancer defense supplements, antihistamines, and blood purifiers.


Today, a lot of research has been done on dietary supplements for older adults and more scientists agree that taking them can indeed help you stay healthier and help slow down the aging process. They may contain certain vitamins and minerals that can not be found in usual food sources and may also contain herbal extracts that have anti-aging and anti-oxidant properties. Some of the common herbs that contain medicinal properties for the skin and hair include chamomile, Rosemary, and Roman chamomile. Herbal extracts such as aloe vera, grape seed extract, ginkgo biloba, mannatech and green tea can also help increase blood flow and promote more efficient energy levels.
When used in conjunction with a healthy diet, dietary supplements for older adults can aid in many health conditions, including osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, stroke, cancer, multiple sclerosis, macular degeneration and bone loss. Osteoporosis is a normal condition for the bones that tend to become thin and become more easily broken. However, as people get older, they may suffer from inadequate vitamin D and calcium in their diets, which can lead to vitamin D deficiency, osteoporosis and bone loss.


The Food and Drug Administration approved the use of dietary supplements for osteoporosis and other diseases and ailments in June 2021. According to the FDA, the Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of seven different vitamins and mineral formulas for the treatment of chronic heart failure, rheumatoid arthritis and certain breast cancers. For this reason, patients should always consult with their health care providers before taking any dietary supplements.


According to the National Institute of Health, dietary supplements for elderly adults with Alzheimer's disease were more effective at improving the cognitive functions of the old individuals than the standard medicines. Moreover, healthcare providers believe that regular use of these medicines can lower the chances of having a stroke or a heart attack. The medicines are safe when administered according to the package directions, but healthcare providers must talk to their patients about possible interactions between the medicines and other dietary and herbal medicines.


There are no laws that regulate the sale of dietary supplements, but the Food and Drug Administration requires the companies manufacturing them to display the ingredients of the dietary supplement. The NIA also publishes a weekly publication called NDI Guide, which provides an annual overview of dietary supplements and medicines containing vitamins, minerals and herbs that are known to affect the body systems.
